    The D.O.C.G. of Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most heralded and recognized expressions of Sangiovese in Tuscany. Yet there is another side to Montalcino — one that speaks more directly, more immediately, and often just as clearly of place. Rosso di Montalcino offers a window into the region without the weight of extended aging, capturing the purity of fruit and the character of the hills themselves.

    Founded in 1986 by Andrea Cortonesi, Uccelliera has established itself as one of the leading producers in Montalcino. The estate is located on the hillsides of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, a highly regarded southern zone of the appellation, with vineyards set in the shadows of Mount Amiata and Poggio d’Arna. Today, the domaine comprises approximately 10 hectares, farmed with a focus on balance, low yields, and clarity of expression. Cortonesi’s wines are known for combining structure with precision, a hallmark of this cooler, higher-elevation sector of Montalcino.

    The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino is produced entirely from Sangiovese, sourced from the same estate vineyards that feed the Brunello, but bottled with a shorter aging regimen that emphasizes freshness and accessibility. On the nose, sour cherry, dried herbs, and a touch of earth. The palate is energetic and well-proportioned, with bright acidity, fine tannins, and a savory finish that speaks unmistakably of Montalcino.

    This is a classic Rosso for the table — equally comfortable alongside pasta with ragù, grilled sausages, or simple roast chicken. A reminder that Montalcino’s greatness isn’t only measured in patience, but also in immediacy.
